* SAREX NEWS *
==============
The following message from the STS-59 crew was received via SAREX by
Dave, N6JLH in California:
We used the SAREX rig today to talk with 2 of our astronauts now
stationed in Star CIty, near Moscow, and 2 cosmonauts. One of
the astronauts was my friend and former STS-37 crewmate, Ken
Cameron, R3/KB5AWP. Ken also got me into ham radio. It was terrific
to hear his voice after several months corresponding by e-mail
only! Linda, N5RAX and I and crewmate Kevin Chilton spoke to Ken
and the cosmonauts including U6MIR, Anatoli Artsibartski, on two
succesive orbits. What a great way to use ham radio!
They were standing near the Yuri Gagarin statue, using an HT
with a 5/8 whip, standing on a car to increase their elevation!

* VE7BQH MAKES DXCC ON 144 MHZ *
================================
Heartiest congratulations to Lionel Edwards, VE7BQH, on becoming the fourth
radio amateur to receive a DXCC award for 144 MHz, reported in May QST.
What's more, Lionel did it with an antenna having forward gain of
approximately 23.7 dBd, about 5 dB smaller than that of anyone else to have
reached this exalted level of VHF DXing (so far, W5UN, KB8RQ and SM7BAE).
The 336-element collinear array at VE7BQH is rotatable in the Z axis
(polarization) as well as the normal X and Y axes (azimuth and elevation),
which accounts for some of Lionel's outstanding results; his own operating
ability, dedication and persistence over many years obviously contributed
as well.
VE7BQH is perhaps best known as the ever-patient, ever-helpful net control
station, premier technical advisor and chief schedule-arranger of the
2-meter EME Net, which meets each Saturday and Sunday on 14.345 MHz, a role
he has filled without peer for many years. It's fair to say that without
Lionel, 144 MHz EME would not have become anything like what it is today,
and none of those using the mode could possibly have accomplished even a
fraction of what they have done so far.
Congratulations, Lionel, thanks for everything and please keep up the great
work you're doing for all of us!

* GARC WORLD WIDE WEB SERVER NEWS *
===================================
The NASA Goddard Amateur Radio Club, Inc. in Greenbelt, Maryland has been
working behind the scenes on projects that may benefit all amateur radio
operators in general and perhaps AMSAT members in particular.
Astronaut Ron Parise, WA4SIR, has been beta testing a BBS which is
accessible via the Internet through telnet and ftp, telephone modem, and
packet radio (locally on 145.090 MHz and nonlocally through "packet
wormholes"). With Ron's heavy STS-67 crew training as of late, Jim
Blackwell N3KWU is picking up much of the work to complete the beta phase.
The BBS contains Keplerian orbital elements updated daily, AMSAT bulletins,
SAREX bulletins, club member mail service, club announcements, space
shuttle mission info and lots more.
Access via Internet: wa3nan.gsfc.nasa.gov or 128.183.105.17
via landline: 301-286-4137
via packet: see above parenthetical
Additionally, the Goddard Amateur Radio Club has a home page for public
viewing on the GARC World Wide Web server. It contains the latest GARC
Newsletter in electronic form, latest space shuttle keps, GARC calendar of
events, details of upcoming club activities, current WA3NAN QSL card, club
facility-repeater-BBS info, a morse code experiment and more.
WWW access URL:

Subject: 2TFD (Terminated Folded Dipole)
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Does anyone have any experience with the 2TFD (terminated tilted
folded dipole) antenna ?
I have in the past experimented with this antenna, but I'd like to
try this one again. Some say it's nothing more than a radiating
dummy load, but it does have some merit. There are articles about
this topic in Tech Corr. May 94 QST, in "Practical Wire Antennas"
an RSBG publication and in Jun QST 1949. It's not the most
effecient, but does have merit for a reasonable compromise as a
frequency agile antenna.
Does anyone out there in radioland have access to old QST's ? I'd
like to get a photocopy of Jun 1949 QST pages 54-55.
What I'm trying to determine is what is the recommended antenna
position angle with respect to the horizontal for best performance.
In the RSGB book by G3BDQ, an angle of 30 degrees from the VERTICAL
is recommended. This may be an error in that text. It seems as if
it should be 30 degrees down tilt from the HORIZONTAL. Any ideas
out there ?

We used this antenna at SP8KIT in 1970s. Tuned well but the
performance was unspectacular. I think time for such antennas has
already passed.
In the past it was desirable to have antenna that could be tuned with
the Pi-filter, built into virtually every rig. If the antenna had
impedance much out of the Pi-filter range, the antenna could not be
matched or the second capacitor in the filter sparked. G5RV was one
of such antennas that usually worked fine with Pi-filters.
Now that almost everyone has an antenna tuner that tunes much wider
range of impedances than the Pi-filter, one cares more about smaller
losses. So eliminate that resistor in T2FD, substitute the coaxial
cable in G5RV by extending the ladder line etc.Perhaps the rule is not
universal. One has a resistor in rhombic antennas to attenuate one
direction.

ARLP017 Propagation de KT7H
With steadily decreasing geomagnetic activity, HF conditions
improved considerably last week. A indices dropped below ten and
remained in the single digits. Solar activity was low, but the
quieter geomagnetic conditions made propagation much better.
Unfortunately, a return to active geomagnetic conditions is forecast
for the near term. Returning coronal holes rotating back into view
on the solar surface are expected to throw HF bands into havoc over
the next few days. Disturbed conditions should gradually decline
after May 1, but may not reach normal until the middle of May.
Solar flux should rise gradually, peaking near 100 around May 7
through 11.
Sunspot Numbers from April 21 through 27 were 53, 64, 54, 72, 60, 50
and 58, with a mean of 58.7. 10.7 cm flux was 86.7, 85.4, 85.2,
83.4, 82.8, 81 and 78, with a mean of 83.2.
The path projection for this week is a special Hamvention edition
for Saturday, April 30 from the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio to
Honolulu, Hawaii.
80 meters should be open from 0430 to 1130z. Conditions should peak
around 0630 and remain strong until 1030. 40 meters looks good from
0400 to 1200, peaking from 0530z to 1000. Check 30 meters from 0300
to 0800, and again from 1100 to 1400. 20 meters should be open from
0100 to 0530. Check 20 again around 1500 to 1600. 17 meters may
have an opening around 2000 to 2200. 10, 12 and 15 meters do not
look good this weekend.

I recently moved to Canada from Kansas, but am unsure of
the reciprocity issue. I have a General Class U.S. license (N0LKI) -- do I
have the same privileges (band and emission limits, etc) here in
Canada as I would in the states?
There're probably other ways to find this information, but
I had to leave most of my library, including most amateur books,
back in the states.
Thanks for any help, either posted here or e-mailed to me.
